Barpro recently visited one of our clients, a fruit storage facility in Villiersdorp, for their annual Service Level Agreement (SLA) inspection. Their Storax mobile racking system was installed and commissioned by Barpro in 2013 and allows for a total capacity of 1920 fruit pallets with an additional 659 pallet locations on static racking.   Our technician, Mark Pearce, completed the inspection and could easily recognise the reasons for their impeccable housekeeping. Permanent staff who possess a sense of ownership of the store and equipment perform daily checks and clean-ups. Store managers have regular walkthroughs ensuring that all procedures are adhered to. Their forktruck drivers are trained so that even after 4 years of operation they have zero damage to their storage racking systems. Another great benefit for them is that they have an ongoing Service Level Agreement with Barpro. This means that they are entitled to certain benefits allowing us to look after their mobiles and keep them running for years to come.   An overview and benefits of our Service Level Agreement include: Maintenance service inspections that are done twice a year. 24Hr telephonic support service Significant reduction of unnecessary maintenance costs so long as any repairs are actioned after each inspection. Limited unplanned downtime. Up-to-date health and safety documentation for the mobile racking system in electronic format. Identification and rectification of incorrect procedures which can cause downtime and damage down the line. The operating and safety points our technicians report back to the client on, include: Identifying additional training needs. Are the safety features working. Any damage to the mobile base structure Electrical Systems Wheels and Drives Cleaning required around floor and rails Housekeeping Racking Superstructure (visual condition check) Any overloading of the mobile bases.   Reports are sent to the client within 5 days of the inspection and include a 3 dimensional graphic illustration reflecting exact damage, if any, to the structural components. With steel prices set to increase up to 10% during September, Barpro has obtained the following commitment from our local supplier on the pricing of mesh grids so long as they are ordered before end September and delivered before end October.   Mesh grids are an alternative to pallet support bars and provide increased support to pallets. They can also provide personnel protection under cantilever racks. Mesh grids work particularly well with most types of plastic pallet which can get brittle in cold temperatures as well as having a tendency to slip off load beams.   The two mesh grid types available are as follows: 1000mm entry by 1100mms deep with 40mm overhangs front and back. 1.  5mm wire mesh both ways with 2mm thick steel stiffening braces: R275 excluding VAT and excluding delivery from Cape Town. To suit up to 1000kg pallets. Grid weight 13kgs 2.  5mm by 6mm wire mesh with 2.6mm thick steel stiffening braces: R300 each excluding VAT and excluding delivery from Cape Town. Given today’s sophisticated fabrics and detergents, one has to ask why clothes are still boiled at all.   The answer is a deep seated human fear of disease, more specifically Typhus and its close relative, Trench Fever. Shortly before WW1 the typhus Bacillus was first identified by two researchers Ricketts and Von Prowazek who both died of the disease. Charles Nicolle was awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine for discovering that Typhus and trench fever were spread by the body louse. Infection is not caused by louse bites per se but by the subsequent scratching of the itchy bites which allowed infection by the lice faeces.     In WW1 there were typhus outbreaks on the Eastern front, and over 5 million people died of the disease in Russia during the last months of the war and the subsequent revolution. On the Western Front the main problem was trench fever. It was combated by de lousing soldiers and by boiling or burning their clothing. Steam Ironing became popular for much the same purpose as it killed hard to get to lice eggs in the clothing seams. Prior to these diseases being understood, Typhus or “jail fever” was rampant in British Jails, and is said, during the 18 and early 19 centuries to have killed over 25 percent of inmates every year. More died of Typhus in British jails than were ever hung. Napoleon lost more of his Grand Armee during the retreat from Moscow in 1812 to Typhus than in combat.   However, if there is one thing that Barpro’s range of Delf freezer wear doesn’t like, it’s being washed in boiling water.   The maximum temperature for washing Delf Freezer wear is 40 Degrees C if it is washed at higher temperatures the thread weakens eventually causing seams to split.
