Picture taken after shortly after the store was brought down to -20 degrees Celsius  Five years ago a major trawling and fish processing operation in Walvis Bay decided to invest in their own freezer store rather than rely on costly third-party storage as they’d be using until then.   The requirement started off needing only approximately 500 pallet positions in a fairly small facility, but as the project developed through the planning stages, and the customer came to realise just how space-efficient mobile racking was, the requirement grew to a minimum of 1500 pallets. With the use of Storax mobile racking it proved possible to achieve in excess of this number in a freezer of only 720 sq. metres, and with every pallet being individually accessible.   Having started planning early in 2012 through into 2013, by the end of that year installation had commenced, and final handover and commissioning was completed in early 2014. However, it was only a year later that the customer realised that he had been far too conservative in his estimates, and as the company developed the need arose to construct a further facility for yet another 3000 pallets.   Serious planning started in 2015, and by the end of that year the new freezer was finalised at approximately 1250 sq. metres accommodating well over 3000 pallet in Storax mobile racking. Despite various construction and project delays the new facility was completed during the following year, and the racking system installed at the beginning of 2017 with commissioning before mid-year. Barpro recently visited one of our clients, a fruit storage facility in Villiersdorp, for their annual Service Level Agreement (SLA) inspection. Their Storax mobile racking system was installed and commissioned by Barpro in 2013 and allows for a total capacity of 1920 fruit pallets with an additional 659 pallet locations on static racking.   Our technician, Mark Pearce, completed the inspection and could easily recognise the reasons for their impeccable housekeeping. Permanent staff who possess a sense of ownership of the store and equipment perform daily checks and clean-ups. Store managers have regular walkthroughs ensuring that all procedures are adhered to. Their forktruck drivers are trained so that even after 4 years of operation they have zero damage to their storage racking systems. Another great benefit for them is that they have an ongoing Service Level Agreement with Barpro. Aquatic Foods was established in Cape Town more than 20 years ago to meet the growing demand by top hotels and restaurants for the finest seafood, sustainably and responsibly sourced both locally and internationally. By 2010 personalised and expert service to the hospitality industry had led to business success, and such growth that a new dedicated freezer store was needed for their wide and varied product range.   At planning stage the concept of mobile racking was introduced as a means of making maximum use of the size of freezer being considered. However, the installation of the full mobile system as proposed by Barpro/Storax would be fairly expensive and would needlessly provide far more accommodation for palletised frozen fish and allied products than would be initially required.   Nonetheless, Managing Director Michael Niese was wisely considering the future when he made the decision to install into the new floor only the rails required for the full system of mobile racking, but equipped the store with just the conventional fixed racking as Phase One of the fit-out. This provided storage for somewhat over 700 pallets; but if and when mobile bases were added later this could increase two-fold to more than 1400 pallets, as Phase Two.   Aquatic had reached this growth point by late 2016, and plans were put in place to expand the freezer with the addition of the mobile bases and the extra racking needed. The bases were duly ordered from Barpro and shipped from Europe in time for installation at the end of June this year. The system was duly, and successfully, installed and commissioned during July.   Quotes Michael Niese – “It seemed perhaps a bit of a gamble at the time, but in retrospect I’m very glad we had the foresight to look ahead and invest in the installation of rails at the outset. This has enabled us to cope with the potential growth that has since manifested, and we can now move forward with freezer capacity nearly doubled, ensuring adequate storage space into the foreseeable future.
