Hazards of welding in cold stores

Just another example of why welding in cold stores must be properly controlled, especially when it takes place close to insulated panels. “HAMMONTON — Workers welding at Buffalo Farms Freezer and Cold Storage may have sparked a fire that destroyed the fruit-packing and storage warehouse last week, Hammonton police Chief Robert Jones said Monday. However, the cause remains under investigation, he said. The building and land at 205 Pine Road, which includes 40,000 square feet of cold storage, freezer and repacking space, are assessed at about $1.2 million, according to state tax records.” Read more on the story HERE Safety Tip – Always have a fire blanket and extinguisher in the welding vicinity at all times [gravityform id=”10″ title=”true” description=”true”]

Etlin International visits UK's greatest

Etlin International visits UK’s greatest

I visited, I think the most biggest and impressive temperature controlled warehouses that the UK has to offer.   The first warehouse had a total capacity of 197 000 pallets and increasing. The second site visited holds 41 500 frozen but they have other sites around UK. Third – probably the largest frozen logistics company in UK, capacity of 365 000 pallets across 12 stores. And fourth was 160 000 pallets on the site.   The capacity of these warehouses were the most impressive and the volume that actually gets moved in/out, it was just WOW !!   There were many highlights in visiting these stores such as the energy efficiency initiatives, most the product is handled with ride on pallet jacks instead of forklift trucks as opposed to here in S.A – this is actually a huge mind set change for me, the picking abilities and purpose built infrastructure to handle 1600 sku’s is just mind-blowing. In all the stores the primary mobile equipment supplier is Storax so we were happy to see we are following global industry leaders in this category, very few maintenance or breakdown issues on the system – very similar to what we have here in S.A. A lot of these stores aim to offer a full “cradle to grave” solution which is very convenient to the customer and beneficial to the organization.                       We would also just like to thank Barpro/STORAX for arranging the visit, hosting us and for commuting us around, there was a wealth of information shared which we could probably never place a value on, it was truly a mind blowing trip with just so much of information to absorb and ideas to be transformed, on behalf of Etlin we would just like to convey our heartfelt gratitude for everything.     Christopher Nulliah – Logistics Director   [gravityform id=”10″ title=”true” description=”true”]

Euro catering

The ideal solution for Euro Catering

Marco Palmieri, himself a trained chef, started Euro Catering in 2001 to service the local and national hospitality and restaurant trades often needing sometimes-hard-to-get speciality foods imported from Europe – mainly Italy. Operating out of fairly modest premises in Killarney Gardens, the business proved successful, and stock levels began to strain the storage space available for it. Then in 2014 Marco teamed up with Nicholas Holman, and together they formed a new company, Palman Foods, so that now frozen local produce – fish, meat, poultry, etc. – could be added to their supply offering. Space now became an even more pressing concern. A freezer store was built but with only limited space this soon proved too small to be able to efficiently handle the volume of product involved; and the result was huge overcrowding whereby pallets were stacked one on top of another, filled the aisles and gangways, and nothing was quickly accessible without first moving other goods. An additional freezer was urgently needed, but only in 2016 did neighbouring premises become available, and this in the form of a conventional portal frame ‘shed’ with limited height and a pitched roof. The solution was cleverly conceived by Nick Mitchell of Frizon Refrigeration – an insulated freezer ‘box’, with associated refrigeration plant, built inside the shed by Intastore, extending even up into the pitch of the roof where possible. This made maximum use of the space, but the chamber was still only about 260 sq.m. and with a ceiling height of not much more than 6m. However, with the application of Storax mobile pallet racking Barpro were able to achieve a capacity of 300 pallets of frozen produce, all of which were quickly and individually accessible.   The entire project was conceived, installed and commissioned in mere months during the latter part of the year, and Marco had filled it with product virtually immediately. He now has storage space for better inventory levels, and is able to more quickly and efficiently service his customer base. Quotes Marco – “I’ve no idea how we managed before, and I’d hate to go back to the old way of doing things. Mobile racking certainly solved many of my problems”.       [gravityform id=”10″ title=”true” description=”true”] Read more: New innovations at Novo Fruit Packers Read more: Why Barpro Storage? – Its simple!
