What to do with sub-standard wooden pallets

Over the years, we have noticed a rapid decline in the overall quality of pallets in many of the industries to whom we have supplied mobile racking systems. This is probably inevitable given that the pallets are ultimately exported with the product, and as such are considered a disposable item that needs have as little cost attached as possible.   The result is of course that the pallets are unable to withstand damage, or even (often) successfully support the load, and frequently deflect excessively and eventually break, causing product damage and worse.   At Barpro we are always keen to assist our customers with solutions to real challenges, and years ago developed our pallet support bars to help counter this problem. This bar spans between the load beams from front to back providing additional support to the centre line of the pallet. We have traditionally recommended and fitted one for each pallet.   However, it seems that pallet quality has deteriorated further, and the other day at a major Western Cape pack-house we found that the pallets, although supported in the centre, are still deflecting close to collapse on the outer edges.                         Accordingly we have developed a full pallet-size weld-mesh grid in an attempt to counter this situation, and we tried a prototype out at this fruit exporter recently. We found that the grid definitely reinforces the pallet – and may even prevent it from completely breaking – but it did not fully prevent it from deflecting.                                 We are now working on a further development whereby the grid will be fitted with additional strengthening struts to make them more rigid under load.   Anyone who has experience of this issue, and has any useful ideas in this connection, contact Alan or James (info@barpro.co.za) – we’d be delighted to have feedback. Overloading STORAX Mobiles

Storax mobiles have been designed to operate safely with pallets of a certain weight. This weight is clearly stated on the final drawings and is calculated as the total allowable weight per base which is on the mobile signage.   In the last year or so imports of mechanically deboned chicken and other similar products into South Africa have increased dramatically.  This product is relatively dense and the pallets can easily weigh 1200kgs gross when previously the maximum weight for the same height of pallet would have been 1000kgs.   In a Storax system, this represents a 20% overweight per mobile base. The racking beams and frames are similarly overloaded, making the Storax system unsafe. Indications of overloading include bearing failures. With the load beams you will notice increased beam flexing and possibly twisting.   Please check your Storax mobiles and make sure that they are not overloaded. We do have rack testing tools in stock which can be used to measure load beam flex. If you are uncertain regarding permissible pallet weights please get in touch and we will confirm the gross pallet weight(s) for which the system was designed.   If the pallets are overweight there are several solutions depending on each situation and the weights involved.  The simplest solution being to store 2 pallets in a 3 pallet bay and one pallet in a 2 pallet bay. This will reduce store capacity, but the safety of the Storax mobiles will be maintained.

Racking Collapses in the Cold Storage Industry

Fortunately the collapse of pallet racking, whether in cold or ambient situations, is very uncommon. However recent experience shows that it can happen, and when it does the results are usually disastrous. At the very least major disruption of operations and serious financial loss from damage to product and equipment; at the worst, injury or even loss of life for personnel. It is not always easy to explain such disasters, but one thing must be clearly understood. Racks do not collapse on their own. Modern racking from reputable suppliers is carefully engineered to perform the task it is specified for. Racks collapse only when compromised by serious overloading beyond its planned function, or from damage caused by carelessness, or misuse. The latter is generally the result of being impacted by handling equipment. Such damage weakens the structure, and although a major impact can sometimes cause immediate collapse, often it is accumulated small impacts that gradually build up until the rack is unable to absorb any further abuse and ‘gives up’. It is critical that drivers report any rack damage as soon as it occurs even if they were the responsible party. There are many dangers to be aware of when operating a pallet-rack-equipped facility. Warehouses and cold-stores are being built higher for cost and operational efficiencies – the norm now being up to 12 metres – and this makes the risks greater, and also the operators’ task more demanding. It is essential that operators are professionally trained – and this includes ongoing refresher courses – but motivated as well. Their eye sight also needs to be checked on a regular basis. They should be reminded constantly of the potential dangers of carelessness; and it is vital to ensure that the demands of the job are made as reasonable as possible. Managers and supervisors need to be aware of the pressures put upon operators by the ‘need for speed’, and also of the difficulties and discomforts of the work environment. This is nowhere more true than in cold-stores where sub-zero temperatures can numb not only the body, but the mind as well. Concentration and reflexes can be measurably impaired in the cold, and it is vital that operators be given the best protection possible. Heated cabs, adequate freezer-wear, etc. will lead to greatly enhanced performance as well as safety. So apart obviously from over-loading, the first vital component of avoiding the danger of racking collapse is preventing damage . . . But the second is being aware of such damage if and when it occurs. Which brings us to rack inspection. This however is a subject all on its own, and deserves a follow-up article in the next issue.
