Case Study – Eskort Limited Cold Store, Heidelberg

As part of a larger upgrade, Eskort Ltd in Heidelberg decided to increase their cold store capacity by installing Storax mobiles. With a building width of 32m, length of 20m and height of 9m they were  able to fit in under 600 pallets on static racking. Using the building volume and the client’s  pallet specification, the Barpro design team tested different mobile  options to increase the useable capacity and  were able to achieve 1164 pallets, an increase of 94%. The rails were laid at  ambient temperatures followed by the bases which were installed at temperatures of -24°C. Protected by Delf freezer wear, the installation was completed  on time and without causing any delays to the client’s tight schedule. Divac were the design and consulting engineers, and the racking superstructure was installed by Acrow Racking and Shelving.

Tuffy Go Mobile

Tuffy Brands were established in Cape Town in 1986 and pioneered the re-cycling of plastic waste into useful household consumables. Who is not familiar with their famous black refuse bag-on-a-roll? This business model was so successful that by 2012 they had outgrown all existing facilities and decided on the need for a dedicated warehouse for both raw materials and finished product. A strikingly attractive architecturally designed warehouse was erected conveniently opposite their main factory at Airport Industria, and Storax mobile racking was selected for their palletised storage due to its outstanding space-saving benefits. The system has given very satisfactory service, but by 2015 further growth had rendered this warehouse insufficient for their needs, and the decision was taken to build an additional warehouse alongside, and aesthetically complementing, the existing building. Barpro were appointed to install new mobile racking for an additional 5000 plus  pallet positions, and the contract was timeously completed in September this year. “When it came to selecting the storage system for our new facility”, says Tuffy’s Simon Duffet, “we considered alternative high-density systems, but it made sense to stay with the tried and tested system already so successfully in use. Moreover we needed a supplier who we trusted, and knew were capable of supplying and installing a durable system that would work into the future. They haven’t let us down”. How to prevent cold store panel damage

Prevent cold store panel damage- We recently received a query on how to fix up scratches and dents to paneling in a cold store. The answers are quite simple. If the scratches, bumps or perforations are on the outside of the store, a bit of filler could repair the outside panel skin and a local car panel spray painter could match the colour. If it is in the freezer, then it would be better to cover any deep impacts or perforations with a chromadek patch (available from Intastor, Cape Town).  If it is just a scratch, the panel shop should be able to assist with a spray but it’s not recommended as the additives will stay in the store.  Some touch up paint would be safer.  However do a little at a time as you don’t want a smell from the paint lingering.
