While viewing a busy temperature controlled case picking operation in Australia, I asked what improvements had been realized through the use of “Voice” technology in case picking applications. To the manager in charge, the use of “Voice” in freezer applications was a “no brainer”. The project payback through increased efficiencies and cost savings was estimated at less than six weeks.   The case picking was done out of selective fixed racking inside the freezer and chiller chambers. The picking staff were wearing the correct PPE including high quality freezer wear.           Efficiencies can be further improved with the use of multi-level mezzanine floors, which increase the number of SKU’s that be picked per m2 of freezer room floor area. Isn’t it time that South African cold stores adopted these innovations?

Sparta Foods with Storax Mobile Racking

Barpro Storage SA has recently completed the installation of mobile racking for Sparta Foods in Welkom, leading suppliers of top quality beef and other frozen products in the Free State. Storage capacity was optimised in both the new freezer and chilled stores, with the use of Storax mobile racking providing for the fully selective accommodation of well over 2000 tonnes of product. Both stores were designed to enhance productivity by accommodating maximum full pallet loads, while still allowing for picking aisles.   Rails were installed to full extent of both rooms ready for increasing storage capacity in the future by the provision of additional mobile bases. Case Study – Eskort Limited Cold Store, Heidelberg

As part of a larger upgrade, Eskort Ltd in Heidelberg decided to increase their cold store capacity by installing Storax mobiles. With a building width of 32m, length of 20m and height of 9m they were  able to fit in under 600 pallets on static racking. Using the building volume and the client’s  pallet specification, the Barpro design team tested different mobile  options to increase the useable capacity and  were able to achieve 1164 pallets, an increase of 94%. The rails were laid at  ambient temperatures followed by the bases which were installed at temperatures of -24°C. Protected by Delf freezer wear, the installation was completed  on time and without causing any delays to the client’s tight schedule. Divac were the design and consulting engineers, and the racking superstructure was installed by Acrow Racking and Shelving.
