A demand for increased storage capacity came at a crucial time for Maydon Wharf Port Terminal, located in Durban. As the Citrus Import and Export seasonal demand continued to grow, so did the requirement for additional storage space at MPT.   This was rather urgent and installation had to occur rather quickly. Fortunately for MPT the installation process could be streamlined as they already had 7 STORAX bases and racking thereof in storage, which had previously been relocated from Cape Town to Durban.     The stored units would allow our experienced installations team to continue with the installation of the relocated bases and racking, whilst the additional 6 new STORAX bases were en route from the UK.   The existing cold room, housing Drive In racking, would be modified to accommodate the mobile racking storage system. Once the Drive-in racking had been removed, an overlay floor was poured upon the successful installation and accurate levelling of the Storax rails had been completed by the Barpro installations team.     Barpro Storage working alongside the likes of Bruce Stott’s, Racking and Shelving specialist crew, were able to install the 13 Storax mobile bases and racking in excellent time. The new cold room allows for a TOTAL storage capacity of 1774 pallets in the 31.2m x 39.7m cold room. 1612 pallets weighing up to 1500kgs each could be positioned on the mobile bases and an additional 162 pallets on the static racking. Keith McClarty, an independent poultry processing consultant originally approached Barpro Storage in 2011 to assist with the design of a new holding store for Namib Poultry Industries abattoir situated 30kms north of Windhoek.   Due to Initial storage requirements and budget constraints the store was equipped with fixed selective racking for 560 pallets, although Keith persuaded his clients to install Storax rails in the floor and to design the racking for later installation on Storax mobiles. It was not until 2018 that Keith got back in touch to say that increased abattoir throughputs required additional storage space, necessitating the installation of 5 mobile bases and associated racking at operating temperatures to increase the store capacity to 984 pallet positions.   After an initial check by Barpro technicians to confirm that the floor had not been affected by frost heave, the bases were manufactured in Cape Town, arriving onsite at the end of February. The additional racking arrived shortly thereafter.   As with all retrofit jobs, things don’t always go quite according to plan. The room was completely full which made the base installation difficult and insufficient racking was delivered initially to complete all the mobile bases.   However Danie Coetzee and Werner Le Roux fitted the first 3 Storax bases and racking in just over a week which gave the manger Alwyn Smit sufficient space to carry on with before leaving for Cape Town, returning three weeks later to compete the installation.   Keith phoned after the project was completed to convey the client’s thanks and to say that the estimated payback period would be just 6 months as stock no longer had to be transported to Windhoek for storage.   So, when designing a freezer or chilled store, it’s worth installing Storax rails, even if they aren’t needed for another 8 years!   Need more space in your existing cold store? A freezer measuring 9.2 by 14.86 meters and 5.9 meters high could be considered too small for mobile racking. Barpro was approached by Nick Mitchell, of Frizon Refrigeration, at the end of January to assist his client, In 2 Foods, increase the storage capacity of a new cold store which needed access to every pallet location.  After some on site discussions it was decided to slightly increase the store width and install one Storax base, giving a total capacity of 120 pallets.     Work started on site in Mid- February, digging out the existing floor. This was followed by the installation of the insulated panels, subfloor insulation, Storax rails and poured concrete floor. The room was racked out and ready to go by the last week of March.     Project managed by Nick Mitchell, who also supplied the refrigeration, Julian Naicker of Insulated Project Solutions installed the panel, Melt Wahl of Melt Wahl Concrete Services laid the floor, Barpro Storage supplied the embedded rail and mobile base, while Ron Bonthuys of Dexion Cape installed the racking superstructure.   The team appreciates the assistance provided by Ruan Brits and Salieg Barnes of In 2 Foods and hopes that the new cold store will provide sufficient additional storage space.
