Preventing fire in freezer stores

FX PREVENT – An alternative to sprinklers in colds stores and warehouses?

Sprinklers in cold and freezer rooms, whether they be ceiling mounted ESFR (Early suppression fast response) or in rack, are, as everyone knows, problematic. First there is the cost. If fire main pressures are considered too low, storage tanks, pumps and generators are required, which add significantly to project costs and not infrequently put projects on “hold”. ESFR sprinklers are of the dry pressurized variety, but each sprinkler head must penetrate the insulated ceiling. Improper sealing, especially with EPS panels, will cause water/ice saturation problems in the medium term. Sprinkler activations are far more likely to occur from accidental impacts than from fire. In a freezer store this turns the floor into a skating rink, stops the mobiles from moving and writes off stock. It can take days to remove the ice and get the store back into operation. In the unlikely event of a fire, even if the sprinklers control the blaze until the fire brigade arrives, the stock will still be written off either through temperature gain or smoke and water damage.   Precisely because sprinklers are so problematic in freezer stores, not to mention archives and museums, there has been a concerted European initiative to find better alternatives. One solution has been to pump gas into a freezer chamber as soon as smoke or heat is detected. One of these systems has been installed in Gauteng but the gas must be held on site in bottles which take up space. If there is a fire after several years system performance will depend on how well routine maintenance has been carried out.  Another option is to lower the oxygen content of the air inside the freezer chamber so that fires cannot start.     FX Prevent of Honselersdijkin in the Netherlands has been making LOX, or low oxygen systems for over 10 years. FX Prevent partners with Presscon which has been supplying nitrogen expansion systems for green house heating for over 20 years.  FX Prevent manufactures HP pressure swing absorption systems, which produce nitrogen efficiently for various sizes of building.     The nitrogen is mixed with the air in the cold chamber to reduce the oxygen content from 21.5% at sea level to approximately 17-16% (depending on the flammability of the goods stored in the room). At this level there is insufficient oxygen to allow a fire to start. The atmosphere in the cold room is similar to that experienced by the human body on a commercial aircraft so personnel can still breath normally. The EU is currently finalizing standards on their use and LOX systems have been successfully installed at many facilities including several owned by Kloosterboer.     In South Africa, LOX system costs would depend on exchange rates as well as the size of the freezer store. The number of doorways are critical and should be kept to a minimum. This is because the density of the air is slightly reduced through the process of replacing oxygen with nitrogen, and will suck normal air into the store when the door is open. The fitting of high speed doors to cold store entrances makes a significant difference (between 30 to 40%) to the capacity and cost of the LOX system required. For a Joburg freezer store of 15,510 m3 a FX prevent system with one entrance and high speed doors should cost between R3.0M and R3.5M to install.   While the type of insulation panel used is not critical, proper sealing of these panels definitely is, as the ingress of air via faulty panel joints will compromise the system design. Running costs must also be considered. On the store mentioned above, electricity costs should average 58,000 kWH per year. Maintenance would require 12 hours per year and could be done by trained local technicians. Replacement parts, mainly gaskets and filters, should not exceed R15 000 to R16 000 per annum.   While the running costs are not insignificant, at least the LOX system is in constant use. This is better than having a gas system to where you will only if it works  when you need it in an emergency.     There are no known LOX fire suppression systems operating in South Africa. Reduce energy in your cold storage facility

Southern Cold Storage WINS at reducing operating costs!

Southern Cold Storage in Wadeville Johannesburg has been running now for almost two years.  The brief given to the contractor / owner technical design team comprising of engineers from Lutz Refrigeration on the coldroom design and Barpro Storage on the materials handling and racking to provide the most Capex and Opex efficient freezer storage facility.  This enables Southern Cold Storage to rent out pallet space within the store to clients with the least business start-up cost while paying the minimum on running costs. The iterative design involved revenue modelling play offs against start up costs with this design eventually being settled upon.   The basic layout was determined by the land available with a view to storing as many pallets as possible in the available envelope thereby optimising rental revenue.  To achieve this, Barpro mobile racks were used wherever possible with a small contingent of stationery racks to allow for some flexibility with picking being allowed for if required.  The end result is that this facility can hold 3650 pallets within its roughly 25 000 Cubic metre volume.   A few of the innovations employed to reduce running costs include: 250 kW water cooled multiplex refrigeration plant Cooling tower fans, variable speed driven. Stepper type electronic expansion valves to accurately control suction pressures and prevent liquid flood over under dangerous conditions. The airlock leading to the freezer is dehumidified down to as low as 20% humidity via a Bry Air chemical dehumidifier. All compressors have ABB soft starters to reduce peak kVA draw under startup. Power factor correction system Solar panels on the roof providing up to 70% of instantaneous power usage     All of the above mechanical and electrical innovations certainly help to reduce running costs on the facility considerably as made evident by Uwe Schmidthaus the owner/manager at the facility who compares this facility with his other business Cool Runners which distributes various frozen products in Johannesburg.  Cool Runners has a storage capacity with static racking of 950 pallets in comparison with Southern’s mobile racking approach holding 3 650 pallets.   Uwe points out that in February 2017 Southern Cold Storage only used 80 000 kW-hr in comparison with Cool Runners using roughly 75 000 kW-hr in the same month, making Southern 3.6 times more energy efficient per pallet. Flaming panels

Why are these panels going up in flames?!

Most of us remember that dreadful hotel fire in Dubai on New Year’s Eve in 2012. More recently we have seen the tragic images of the Grenfell Tower in South Kensington, London. As media reports on the Grenfell Tower contained numerous references to “insulated panels” being involved in the spread of the fire we decided to investigate what happened.   The fires in both blocks spread rapidly on the exteriors. They appear to have been started by malfunctioning electrical appliances. The exterior building finishes, in both cases consisted of 8mm thick aluminum composite sandwich panels consisting of aluminum composite skins and a polyethylene core. Such panels are popular in high rise construction as they give a light polished maintenance free finish and are easy to fit. But once the polyethylene combusts, the fire spreads rapidly as the polyethylene melts resulting in burning droplets. These exterior panels however are not insulation panels like we would see in cold stores. Aluminum composite panels can have fire retardant added to the polyethylene. Please use the link to see the differences in combustion.     On the Grenfell Tower block, behind the aluminum composite panels there seems to have been an additional layer of PIR or polyisocyanurate insulation. PIR has an excellent fire rating and probably assisted in retarding the fire spread. When subjected to intense heat, PIR panels will eventually give off smoke, a percentage of which will contain gas. This is obviously dangerous and the market leaders offer a special specification for smoke sensitive areas including residential housing. PIR compares favourably with gas emissions of other insulating materials including mineral wool. What has not come out in the media reports is that gas is also given off by various kinds of burning furniture and insulated material.   The UK’s Building Research Establishment, BRE, is now investigating the Grenfell tower tragedy and a comprehensive report should be available in the next few months. This has not prevented a degree of hysteria with over 160 tower blocks now being said to fail safety standards. Kingspan, Britain’s market leader in the supply of both residential and cold store panels has made it clear that none of their products had been installed on or in the Grenfell Tower block.
