News Article – Chill Out Distribution Ready for Expansion

As winter turned to spring in 2015, Uli Smidt, Managing Director of Chill Out Logistics in Ottery, Cape Town, realised that his existing freezer store would no longer be adequate to cope with the expanding levels of business being experienced, and expected in future. As distributors for OLA ice-cream products (Unilever SA), King Pie, Ma Baker Pies and Artisan Breads in the southern CT region Uli needs to hold considerable stock of the product to cope with growing demand, and he took the bold decision to build a new freezer to expand his capacity. A brand new warehouse was built by GLENKEY Development and Construction on the adjacent site, with an insulated ‘box’ inside the structure, together with a new insulated and reinforced floor and the relevant refrigeration plant. The downside, of course, was that the size of the store would be limited in terms of both area and height by the constraints of the site, which in turn would limit the ultimate capacity of the store. A logical solution was to consider Storax mobile racking which would enable nearly double the number of pallets to be accommodated in the given area compared with conventional racking. Layouts, proposals, and quotations were submitted and discussed, and eventually Uli decided that, although his ultimate need might be for the maximum capacity offered by mobile racking – nearly 600 pallets – his initial need would be for only half that. So with respect to budget constraints it was decided that the rails should be laid in the floor ready for future expansion by the addition of mobile bases, but that only ordinary fixed racks would be installed initially. Construction of the building commenced prior to Christmas shut-down, and started up again early in the New Year, and Barpro were all set to install the rails into the new floor as it was engineered (by Mike Hurworth and Associates). However, by this time new business projections were indicating that the entire store would be filled to capacity almost immediately, even when complete with mobiles, and Chill Out Logistics instructed Barpro to undertake the entire project complete with the addition of the bases. The expanded capacity also enables Uli to offer frozen storage facilities to other local food manufacturers, in addition to accommodating his own products. This additional supply and work was fairly short-notice, but the entire project was successfully completed and handed over to a happy customer in May this year.     Contact Barpro Storage SA to optimise your warehouse space! Sparta Foods with Storax Mobile Racking

Installation of mobile racking for Sparta Foods in Welkom

Barpro Storage SA has recently completed the installation of mobile racking for Sparta Foods in Welkom, leading suppliers of top quality beef and other frozen products in the Free State. Storage capacity was optimised in both the new freezer and chilled stores, with the use of Storax mobile racking providing for the fully selective accommodation of well over 2000 tonnes of product. Both stores were designed to enhance productivity by accommodating maximum full pallet loads, while still allowing for picking aisles.   Rails were installed to full extent of both rooms ready for increasing storage capacity in the future by the provision of additional mobile bases. Barpro Storage was also involved with the training of Sparta’s staff in the operation of the system, and has supplied Delf freezer wear to keep operators warm and productive while working in this hostile environment. “I am highly satisfied with the professional manner that Barpro handled this whole project. I will surely recommend them for anybody that is in need of such a system.” – General manager Niel Venter Require your very own STORAX mobile racking system? Improving your cold store’s efficiency

James Cunningham was recently interviewed by Ilana Koegelenberg, Editor of Interact Media to discuss the evolution of cold stores in South Africa and how they can react positively to the energy crises. Other important topics were also discussed – how to increase the efficiency of stores and cold store workers and that age old question, mobile racking vs. drive-in racking? “Cold stores are on the rise in South Africa as chilled and frozen food become increasingly popular. What is the best racking solution for the cold store of today? The demands for efficient material handling, product logistics, optimal use of space, and maximum flexibility in locating, storing and retrieving of stock, are continuously pushing warehousing solutions toward new frontiers. The rise of the cold store The cold store industry in South Africa only really took off in the 2000s, explains James Cunningham, Managing Director of Barpro Storage SA. “There were cold stores before but the market for frozen food in this country was restricted to exports and a very small affluent portion of society.” After about 2000, the need for frozen vegetables and chicken started to rise and it is still climbing. Previously the issue was that a large portion of the population didn’t have fridges and freezers in their homes, so were unable to store frozen/chilled products. But as more people gained access to electricity, the need for temperature sensitive perishables (and thus cold stores) grew and is still growing. “There always was cold storage but the quantity of commercial cold storage has increased dramatically,” confirms Cunningham. Another driver for the increase on cold stores was the fact that the diet of the lower income population has changed, and the consumption of frozen vegetables and chicken is on the rise. “Although it may have peaked off currently because we’re amidst a recession, that is only temporary,” says Cunningham. The same is true for the rest of Africa. But tinned food is still very popular because a large portion of Africa’s population does not have access to refrigeration. (Apparently you can even buy butter and margarine in tins in some countries!) “We’re actually looking at a revolution in eating habits, which has driven cold storage construction,” says Cunningham.” Click Here for the full article [gravityform id=”10″ title=”true” description=”true”]
