Barpro Attends the Kingspan Cold Store Fire Safety Seminar
Corné Stapelberg and James Cunningham attended the Kingspan cold store fire safety seminar in Johannesburg’s Westcliff hotel on 11th April. It was well attended and the both local and international speakers covered several areas of key interest to local cold store owners.
The main causes of cold store fires in South Africa are hot work, combustion in the roof space, cold store light fittings and, increasingly, arson.
After Rudiger Dederichs from FM Approvals in Frankfurt had described how their engineers work with clients worldwide to decrease their fire risk levels and hence premiums through recommending approved products and making sure fire protection complies with the leading safety standards. Dr Phillip de Vos described the overly complicated and somewhat unworkable state of fire safety standards in South Africa and how a rational fire design is about the only way local freezer stores can avoid the requirement of installing problematic in store and/or in-rack sprinklers.
This was followed by descriptions of Kingspan’s new Modularis cold store design, which we have previously featured in this newsletter as being particularly suited to African requirements.
Finally Kingspan’s long serving technical director Mark Harris presented fire case studies where, against the odds, Kingspan’s QuadCore and PIR insulated panels had prevented fire spread.
A practical demonstration in the hotel gardens of how different insulated panels react to fire and heat focused the mind. The audience was particularly stuck by the levels of toxic smoke given off by burning polyurethane.
